What the concierge actually does
Books tables anywhere in the city, including the places that say they are full. Hires cars, arranges the airport car, holds luggage across a ferry sailing, gets you into Zealandia at dusk when it looks booked out, and keeps a walking map with honest times on it.
They will also tell you when the crossing is going to be rough, when the walk you have planned is not the walk to do today, and which of the three places doing the same thing on Cuba Street is the one to go to.
From the airport, the ferry, the motorway
The hotel is on the sea side of Oriental Parade, between Freyberg Pool and the band rotunda. There is a canopy; there is nowhere to park in front of it for longer than it takes to unload.
- From the airport8 km. Fifteen minutes outside the peak, twenty-five in it. Follow signs to the city through the Mount Victoria tunnel, then left along Oriental Parade. Hotel car NZ$55 one way for up to three; the Airport Flyer stops on Kent Terrace, a six-minute walk.
- From the InterislanderAotea Quay, 3.4 km, eight minutes by car. There is a free shuttle from the terminal to the railway station and the number 2 bus from there.
- From the railway station2.1 km. The number 2 bus stops seventy metres from the door and takes eleven minutes. A taxi is about NZ$16.
- From the north by roadState Highway 1 to the Terrace tunnel, then the waterfront quays east. The last two kilometres are the slow ones between four and six.
